Indian Hawthorn

Let us take a look at the common problem faced when planting Indian Hawthorn. Indian Hawthorns or (Rhaphiolepis species and hybrids) which how it is termed in its botanical name are low – growing evergreen flowering shrubs which is a native of China. With a dense mounded growth habitat, they are ideal low – maintained plants that can be used in small gardens and foundation planting. Most of the Indian Hawthorns grow between 3 to 6 feet tall and it is about the same width. Only a few are large shrubs that can be trained to a small tree. Indian Hawthorns are grown for their attractively neat, rounded form and clusters of flowers. The fragrant, pink or white crabapple like flowers open in clusters above the foliage during every April to May every year. Bluish black berries appear in late summer and persist through the winter. The leathery, dark evergreen leaves are rounded , about 2 to 3 inches long, turning purplish in winter. Indian Hawthorns are most suitable for use as a foundation shrubs while larger cultivars may be used as a hedges, mass plantings and screening. Indian Hawthorns are sensitive to cold and damage and should be sited in protected areas if grown in the Upper Part of South Carolina. Most plants prefer sun, although they will grow in partial shade but whereas for Indian Hawthorn, it prefers moist, well – drained soil, where it is more Drought Resistant. Hawthorn itself is also very tolerant of salt spray and sandy soils and it is a good choice for coastal areas. Pruning of Hawthorn is not necessary needed, but if it is needed, it should be done just after it has bloomed. The most common diseases faced when planting Indian Hawthorn is Entomosporium leaf spot. It is most damaging during the period of frequent rainfall during the spring and fall. The first symptoms of the diseases is tiny, round and red spots on the lower and upper side of the younger leaves. Those expanded and on heavily disease leaves, merge, forming large irregular blotches. Severe infections in the Indian Hawthorn may result in the early dropping of leaves, but to slow down the spread of diseases, space the plants to improve air quality in it. To water the plant, try to use drip irrigation rather than using overheated sprinklers and also remember to collect the fallen and disease leaves when watering the plants.

Can anyone give me a good comprehensive website so as I can Identify a species of tree?

I have a tree with simple rounded leaves which are downy on the upper side. It bears no friut or berries but does have white flowers about 1 in in diameter. The flowers consists of 5 petals and are highly fragrant and together form a star shape. They have long white stamens with red tips. The flower buds are a semi-open fat umbrella shape and dark pink in colour with the white flower wrapped up inside and resembling a pearl. The flower/bud clusters resemble a chandalier in appearance. Blooming August – September. The tree itself is about 12-15ft high and about 8ft wide at its widest point. The growing habit ( shape ) of the tree is similar to that of the Lilac. I have inherited this tree with my new house in the UK but the tree not nessasarily be native to the UK. Any help

A web site with a good dichotomous key (which means they ask “is it this, or is it that”) is http://www.uwsp.edu/cnr/cwes/forestree/Treekey/treekeyframe.htm
Follow it through step by step, and hopefully it will help identify your tree.
