Hass Avocado

Why isn’t my avocado tree producing fruit yet?

I moved into a home with an avocado tree (I believe they are Hass) in June 2007. At the time it had tons of tiny avocados that were grape-sized. There were just a few avocados that hadn’t been picked – they were huge! Ever since October I have been picking the avocados as needed…the ones that had started off grape-sized. There are presently still a large number of avocados on the tree. However, it is almost August, and there are no grape-sized avocados at all, and I haven’t seen any blossoms yet This Year. What did I do wrong? Was I supposed to pick all of the avocados already? Is it still possible that I will get new avocados this year? In the case that I won’t get any new avocados this year, how long can I leave the avocados on the tree (to eat and share as needed)? I live in Southern California.

Many plants and trees won’t produce another crop while there is still fruit on the plant, and some varieties of avacado only produce a crop every other year. Avacadoes are usually harvested when they are a mature size and will ripen after they are picked.
