Cross pollinating corn?

I plan on growing about 1/2 an acre of ornamental, holiday, indian or decorative corn for a fundraiser. I know there are different varieties of corn (field, sweet, super sweet, etc) and they shouldn’t be planted near each other. But the corn I plan to grow is not for human consumption, it’s just to be sold at some holiday festivals this fall. If I have different varieties of corn in the patch, will the cross pollination effect the look of the final plants? Will it effect the production of ears? Currently, I have some seeds of the multi-colored indian corn, and some roundup ready field corn.

Yes, it can affect the look of the corn. But if it’s all ornamental, it shouldn’t be an issue for you.

If you plant a field of white corn next to a field of blue corn – when the corn tassles – if the pollen of the other variety blows over – then you could end up with white ears with a few blue kernals here and there, or vica versa.

So it’s only really an issue if the aesthetics of the color of the kernels is important (which it’s not for you – might even make the ears more interesting), or if you’re saving the seed and wanting to plant next year and not get hybrids growing (again, not an issue for you).
