The Ornish Diet: for the Veggie Lovers Out There

Now, if you’re into vegetables and even more vegetables, then this diet is for you.
The Ornish Diet is a vegetarian diet created by a reputed member of the medical community, Dr. Dean Ornish who is also the author of, “Eat More, Weigh Less”. Well, the title alone is worthy of the familiar line, “too good to be true” but Dr, Ornish is saying that people when people would be eating more of vegetable-based meals, they would reduce their weight. As mentioned earlier, this one is a vegetarian diet that involves consumption of fruits and vegetables rich in fiber and low in fat like the following:
- orange
- melon
- berries
- grapefruit
- legumes
- grains
- beans
The following foods are permitted for this vegetarian diet, but they should only be taken in strict moderation:
- frozen yogurt bars
- sugar-free and fat-free desserts
- dairy products as long as their non-fat (like nonfat cheese and skim milk)
Like with any other diet, the Ornish Diet has its own set of non-allowable foods such as the following:
- nuts
- seeds
- olives
- meat (beef, pork, chicken, fish)
- salad dressings and margarine (oily products)
- sugar and its derivatives (like corn syrup and honey)
- avocado
- dairy products that are not fat-free
- alcoholic beverages
Aside for controlled eating, the Ornish Diet recommends one to go on some light to moderate exercise routines for 30 minutes daily or for one full hour three times a week. Aside from the exercise, the diet also suggest one to get a massage, do some yoga or breathing exercise, meditate and other alternative forms of handling stress. According to Dr. Garnish, such activities would make one feed the soul. Though doing so may not aid in directly reducing weight, a peaceful mind will not tend to make one eat more.

When should I start planting Flower Seeds indoors to transplant outside later? What about vegetables?
I live in southern Ohio & want to have a nice batch of flowers to plant in my outdoor garden in the spring. I also want a nice veggie garden & need to know when to start those seeds indoors, if that’s the best thing to do.
Right about now is the best time. It will give your seedlings an 8-10 week start before transplanting them outdoors. Don’t forget to harden them off, that is, slowly introducing them to the oudoors so that you don’t shock and kill them, before planting.
