The Process of Visiting Fishkill Correctional Prison

I wish when I first visited Fishkill Correctional I would of read the how to’s on a visit to this facility.  Going to a jail of any kind is a very intimidating nerve racking experience.  I have found that people who know what is expected makes the situation alot easier and you can enjoy your visit!

I have been visiting Fishkill Correctional now for over 2 years.  I have to say I have become an expert on the process that’s for sure.  I have also become an expert on the emotional aspect of having a loved one.  I am writing this article so families, freinds and loved ones who visit this facility know ahead of time what to do where to go.

Before you go make sure you have the proper ID and your clothing is not questionable.  Nothing low cut, short or see through.  The best thing to do is bring a change of clothes.  They will deny a visit if your clothes are not appropriate.

Fishkill Correctional Facility is located in Beacon, NY just off Route 84.  It was once a NY State Psychiatric Center.

Below the actual prison itself there is a parking lot where visitors park.  Once you get out of your car you will see the large wire fences which hold these men inside.  At the top of the fence there is large coils of razor wire – it is very intimidating to look at and it takes time to get over this intimidation.  You will find yourself walking up the hill to processing.  People complain about this hill all the time.  I find it my time to think about my visit that is to come.
If you come by train or bus your taxi can take you to the top of the hill.

Once you get to the top of the hill you will see the tall tower where officers sit watching to make sure no one escapes.  You will see a “hospitality center” which is actually a trailer.  You will enter at 8:30.  Sometimes the lines are long but they do go quickly.  I have to say the officers who work in processing do get you in and out of there as quickly as they can.  The entire situation from getting out of your car the first few times is one of real anxiety at least it was or me and I know many many families who feel this way.  It is totally normal.

The officers behind the desk will ask you for your identification and you will fill out your pass.  If you have a package you will need to get your pass then wait online for the CO to go through your package.  The package line can be quite lenghty.  Sundays are best to bring a package.

Once you get through the processing line, package line then you move onto the line where you are checked.  You will be asked to empty your pockets, take off your shoes, glasses, jewelry, jackets, sweatshirts.  Then you will step to the metal detector.  If it rings you will be wanded with a handheld metal detector.  Then the CO stamps you with an invisible stamp.

No one will tell you where to go your on your own but you will exit the trailer and walk down a path to a cage.  There is a CO who is watching for people to come up to the cage. You wont be able to see the CO but they are there.  You will hear a click and you will enter the cage.  don’t worry they will let you out of it!  Once inside the cage close the door then you will walk over to the exit door and you will hear a click then open it and exit.  You will see a set of small stairs which lead to another building.  Once you start down the hall you will see where the CO sits who lets you threw the cage.  Enter this building and walk down the long hall.  You will come to another CO and a gate.  This CO will ask you for your pass and you will need to put your hand which is stamped under the ultra violet light for him to see the stamp.  He will let you through the gate.

You will walk down yet another hall which leads to visting room 2.  Visting room 2 has tables for people who only have one visitor.  Walk all the way through this room past the vending machines and the womens bathroom and past yet another soda machine.  Keep walking and you will enter visiting room 1.  This is a large room with tables for 4 and families.  You will see a desk straight ahead of you as you enter on the opposite wall.  Go up to this desk hand over your pass and they will tell you a table to sit at.  There are letters for the rows of tables posted.  Ask where this table is till you get accustomed to how it all works.

Most of the CO’s who deal with visitors are very kind and nice if you are kind and nice.  I have only had one issue in all the times I have been there and I have been there most weekends in these years.  These CO’s like this post dealing with visitors its an easy post for them to work to on.  They are nice people once in awhile you get a rookie who doesn’t really know the rules or is trying to make an impression but for the most part these are seasoned visiting room officers.

Make sure you bring plenty of change and single dollar bills for the vending machines.
